Jupiter, Fla. (May 16, 2012) With the return of the national drifting series, Formula DRIFT on June 1 & 2, Palm Beach International Raceway has started construction on the Road Course to bring in extra grandstands to accommodate for the increasing number of fans expected to attend the event after last year's sold out race.

Although the goal of the construction is the preparation for the popular racing series Round 3: Invasion, Palm Beach International Raceway plans to make permanent improvements to the Turn 2 & 4 track barriers of the Road Course. In order to increase the size of the viewing areas for sixteen additional grandstands, walls are being moved, a catch fence installed and additional tire packs are being lined up.

SAN Secures U.S. Senate Resolution Designating July 13th As "Collector Car Appreciation Day"

The U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 452 (S. Res. 452) at the request of the SEMA Action Network (SAN) designating July 13, 2012 as "Collector Car Appreciation Day." The date marks the third commemoration in what has become an annual event to celebrate and raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

A growing list of scheduled events, like car shows, cruise-ins and parades, will be held in support of this annual celebration. The SAN is maintaining the event list to commemorate the day at www.semasan.com. Individuals, car clubs and business owners interested in publicizing events can submit the details here: http://fs23.formsite.com/andreac/form5/index.html. If you are unable to celebrate on July 13th, SAN encourages events to be scheduled throughout the month of July. Event organizers will be sent a copy of the official Senate Resolution for display at each event.

States, cities and two Canadian provinces joined the U.S. Senate last year by passing their own proclamations and resolutions. This year, the Hawaii State Legislature has already passed two resolutions and several other states are pursuing similar initiatives.

With the current government regulations, today’s oils are missing many of the critical ingredients needed for engine protection. Engine builders and performance hobbyists are being forced to add in extra protection additives in order to maintain engine safety and performance – but not anymore. Engineers at COMP Cams® and Endure Performance LubricantsTM have been working hand-in-hand to develop a full line of automotive lubricants, the first being the ZDDP-enhanced Engine Break-In Oil that provides maximum protection during initial engine break-in.

Heavily tested and proven by the COMP Cams® R&D team, this advanced lubricant provides maximum engine life while also allowing it to reach its full performance potential. It does so by improving the surface mating of valve train components (especially flat tappets), rotating assembly, rod journals, piston rings, valve guides and other vital areas of the engine. This proprietary formula includes the optimum amount of critical additives ZDDP (Zinc & Phosphorus), Molybdenum, detergents and high grade base oil.
The multi-viscosity, mineral-based COMP Cams® Engine Break-In Oil is fully-formulated and requires no additives or supplements. In addition, this product from the most trusted name in valve train technology is fully compatible with gasoline, methanol and high octane racing fuels. For more information about the COMP Cams® Engine Break-In Oil or any other COMP Cams® product, call us at 1-800-999-0853, or visit us online at www.compcams.com.

As a racer you put a lot of time and effort into doing what you love. Your engine is the heart of what becomes your fastest lap, a successful pull, or your lowest E.T. of the year. With your engine playing such a critical role in your success, what do you really know about the oil you use?

‘Oil is the life blood of our engines’ stated David Klaus – Director, Briggs & Stratton Racing. ‘Where we can engineer an engine for the rigors of racing, hand build it to insure the highest quality on the market today, we cannot control the choice of oil you use. Many of today’s industry standards come with significant compromises that most racers are simply unaware of until it’s too late.’

What if there were an oil available that combined the speed and horsepower of lite oil and gave you the protection of heavy oil? An oil that requires fewer oil changes and gives you better protection over time with the added benefits of rust, corrosion, and wear inhibitors? An oil designed for the fuels we use and the elevated temperatures that high revving, air-cooled engines live in? Lastly, what if it were made by a leader in synthetic racing oils and done in collaboration with the largest manufacturer of small engines in the world?

Introducing Briggs & Stratton 4T Full Synthetic oil customer engineered by AMSOIL. No more what-if’s, no more compromises.

Editor Evan Smith is gearing up to drive Steeda's Q650R at the Track Guys driving event at Sebring International Raceway in a couple of weeks. For more information on Track Guys, go to www.trackguys.com.

As far as Steeda goes, it just doesn't relent in its ability to build street- and track-ready Mustangs. Below are just a few Steeda-sponsored cars and their current shenanigans.

John Urist (NMRA)

John has started off 2012 in dominating fashion in his Steeda and Nitto sponsored Mustang. Having won the first two events of the year he looks to be on his way to another SSO championship. The 7 time world champ started off in Bradenton, FL at the NMRA Spring Break shootout where he qualified 2nd and advanced to the final never running slower than a 7.09, a 7.16 in the final was enough to hold off runner up Andrew DeMarco and give John his first win of 2012. The series then went to Atlanta, GA for the NMRA All-Star Nationals. John qualified number one with a 7.09 and once again ran all the way to the final where a red light by Kenjo Kelly handed him the victory.

Robin Burnett & Anders (Erik) Sjoblom (NASA)

The Steeda road racing duo of Robin Burnett & Anders (Erik) Sjoblom had a tremendous start to the 2012 NASA Great Lakes season. On April 14-15 The Mid Ohio Sportscar Course was home to the season opening double header that offered a mixture of wet and dry racing.

Saturday was a typical rainy spring day in Ohio that saw Robin and Erik take wins in the “American Iron” (AI) and “Camaro Mustang Challenge” (CMC) classes respectively. The lap times were slow but the rain racing was hot as just staying on track was difficult.

Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day giving everyone a chance to get back onto the dry line for more close racing. Robin missed Sunday’s qualifying session with a faulty ground wire that caused him to start the race last in class. Robin had a great start and at the end of lap 2 had the lead and never looked back making it 2 for 2 on the weekend. Erik was not as lucky on Sunday even though he was able to jump to the lead, from his 3rd starting position, and lead a handful of laps. He ultimately finished 3rd after losing 2nd with just 2 laps to go.

Jim Edwards (NASA)

The Steeda-prepped Mustang known as Thor competed in NASA Time Trials at Roebling Road April 14-15. Roebling would be the 5th and 6th race for Time Trials for the year and we anticipated serious competition and we had it. Thor had taken home two 1st places at Carolina Motorsports Park and a 2nd and 3rd at Road Atlanta in March so “he” was itching for a fight.

With a 1:23:325 time, Thor took 2nd places in both the Saturday and Sunday races and this was despite a pesky clutch that eventually gave way on Sunday afternoon. However, the morning times were sufficient to hang onto 2nd place in both events. Carolina Motorsports Park awaits the arrival of the Mighty Thor next month.

Roush Performance and Ford Motorsports are building a limited edition 2013 Roush® Stage 3 Ford Mustang that will be auctioned at the SAE Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. All proceeds will benefit SAE’s education outreach programs.

This one-of-a-kind vehicle features custom silver edition painted body and graphics, a Roush 5.0L Supercharged Engine featuring the Ford Racing “Aluminator” long block with a 625 hp engine and 540 ft-lbs of torque, Roush tuned suspension, custom SVT GT500 track pack wheels, Roush custom body components and a customized Roush interior.

The live auction will take place during the Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, to be held Wednesday, May 16 at Ford Field. Interested bidders may contact Renee Hayes at SAE (724-772-8508) prior to the event, or may also attend the event to participate in the live auction. Arrangements will be made for interested parties to participate by phone during the live auction if they are unable to attend the celebration dinner.

The Foundation also will honor Edsel B. Ford II with the Industry Leadership Award in addition to recognizing young men and women for leadership growth in the industry.

“Roush is proud to join Ford and SAE in the effort to help the United States continue to improve our country’s skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education,” said Jack Roush, NASCAR team owner; legendary builder of performance and specialty vehicles; and former college math and physics professor. “SAE’s programs are proven winners in helping young people get excited and pursue careers in these high-skills areas. We’re pleased to be part of their winner’s circle.”

For the past quarter century, the SAE Foundation has combatted the pressing issue of STEM education through its curriculum development and activities geared toward students from elementary to collegiate levels.

“We know how to make math and engineering cool again in the eyes of young students,” said Matt Miller, director of the SAE Foundation and pre-professional programs. “To date more than four million students have been touched by the K-12 and collegiate programs in all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces and territories.”

“When we can combine the Ford brand with great partners like Roush and the SAE Foundation it’s a win-win,” said Paul Mascarenas, Chief Technical Officer of Ford Motor Company and Chairman of the SAE Foundation’s 25th Anniversary Leadership Committee. “SAE Foundation programs like A World In Motion (AWIM) help encourage and engage young people in science and engineering, making an investment in the future of our industry.”

“This is an exciting opportunity to partner with two great brands like Roush and Ford to benefit our ongoing STEM programming efforts,” stated Miller. “The limited edition Roush Mustang is sure to be a big draw, given the American heritage of this muscle car, married with the performance and aesthetic modifications from Roush. It should be an exciting evening, and the winner will not only drive away with a cool car; the winner will help drive our efforts even further.”

The needs of a true competition engine are quite different than those of the engine under the hood of a typical commuter car. From the basic design needs, to the base component materials, to the sizes of the flow-related hardware, to the precision of the machining, to the capabilities of each pertinent system, very few similarities exist. Many books exist showcasing how to make street-based engines more powerful and/or durable. This book is different, in that it focuses purely on the needs of high rpm, high durability, high-powered racing engines. It begins by looking at the raw design needs, and then shares how these needs are met at the various phases of an engine's development, assembly, testing and tuning.

This book features reviews of many popular modern tools, techniques, products, and testing/data collecting machinery. Showing the proper way to use such tools, how to accurately collect data, and how to use the data effectively when designing an engine, is critical information not readily available elsewhere. The special needs of a competition engine aren't commonly discussed, and the many secrets competition engine builders hold closely are openly shared on the pages here.

Authored by veteran author John Baechtel, Competition Engine Building stands alone as a premier guide for enthusiasts and students of the racing engine. It also serves as a reference guide for experienced professionals anxious to learn the latest techniques or see how the newest tools are used. Baechtel is more than just an author, as he holds (or has held) several World Records at Bonneville. Additionally, his engines have won countless races in many disciplines, including road racing and drag racing.

How to Rebuild & Modify C4 & C6 Transmissions

The Ford C4 and C6 automatic transmissions have been equipped in millions of production rear-wheel drive cars and trucks since they were introduced in the 1960s (C4 in 1964, C6 in 1966). They remained in production deep into the 1980s, when overdrive-equipped transmissions finally eclipsed them. However, the C4 and C6 still remain incredibly popular with enthusiasts, racers, and restorers alike due to their simplicity, strength, and low cost.

Rebuilding either of these transmissions isn't overly difficult, but does require care, some specialized tools, and proper procedure to be followed closely. In How to Rebuild and Modify Ford C4 and C6 Automatic Transmissions, author George Reid walks readers through the process step-by-step, from removing the transmission from the vehicle, to complete disassembly and cleaning, to careful reassembly, to proper re-installation and road testing. Additionally, if the transmission will be used in a high-performance or competition situation, the author includes the various steps required to bolster the unit's strength, using commonly available aftermarket components.

Each chapter contains special notes, sidebars, and technical tips to assist the reader at every step in the process. Some refer to safety, others to time-saving advice, and others to small modifications that may aid long-term durability or help the builder tailor the shift firmness. The author's extensive research and experience with these popular transmissions has resulted in a well-rounded full-color technical guide to their revitalization.

Carroll Shelby: Authorized Biography

The long awaited authorized biography of Carroll Shelby has finally hit bookshelves. This five hundred-thirty five page book is the work on Rinsey Mills, an avid AC fan who's written three books about the cars. What follows is an excerpt from the book about the AC first arriving in America and the initial build.

And now it's Shelby's AC Cobra

Less than a month after he'd returned from England word came through from TWA air cargo at LAX that a shipment from the UK awaited Mr Carroll Shelby.

Dry lakes racer and Bonneville record-breaker Fred Larsen had recently started working for Moon, and it was he and Dean's chief mechanic Roy Gammell who were dispatched to the airport with a pickup and borrowed trailer. Carroll drove over separately, and although he'd promised John Christy that he would be the first journalist to drive the car Gus Vignole met him there and took some photos, exactly as it arrived, for his newspaper. Apart from those in the know, Carroll's liaison with AC and the imminent arrival in the US of the Cobra prototype had been a well-kept secret, but when the next issue of Motoracing hit the newsstands the cat was out of the bag--or, more appropriately, the snake was out of the basket. There was a full front-page photograph of Carroll sitting in the car--a shipping sticker still on its nose, protective tape on the bumpers and no windshield--plus a further two pictures and a short article inside. "Reventlow's Scarab... Hall's Chaparral... And now it's Shelby's AC Cobra, powered by the new Ford V-8 cast iron engine (the same mill that's in the Fairlane 500). The big difference is that the first two were modified sports car racers; Carroll Shelby's will be a production sports car.

"Shelby recently returned from England where he tested it, much to his satisfaction," continued Gus. "The objectives--and the order doesn't matter--are:

"1) Make money selling the machine. (It will go for about $6000).
"2) Knock off the Corvettes and or E-Jags.

"Basically, it's an AC chassis with larger rear axle, differential, stub shafts and drive train, to handle the tremendous torque. And the springs and shock absorbers are also different.

'Aluminum bodied with an all leather interior, it differs from the AC Bristol in that it has a more protruding nose, flared fenders and a rounded rear deck.

'It is an honest 175mph touring car,' Shel beamed as they unloaded the car at L.A. Intl. Airport. 'They are building the car in volume and it won't be long before 100 of them will be available. I think we'll be able to flatten the Corvettes and E-Jags any time.'

"The Cobra's first appearance will probably be at the Cal Club-SCCA May races at Santa Barbara.

"It is not known yet who will drive it."

So from his car's very first introduction to the American public, Carroll made no secret of his intention to go racing, giving this equal priority to the commercial considerations.

SANTA ANA, Calif. — The NMCA (National Muscle Car Association) will bring street legal drag racing back to Auto Club Raceway of Pomona when the 2nd Annual Lucas Oil NMCA West Coast Shootout, presented by JE Pistons, takes place at the legendary facility August 17th-19th, 2012.

This event will not only offer the opportunity for street legal vehicles to compete head-to-head on Auto Club Raceway’s fabled quarter-mile, but also feature the awesome heads-up drag racing classes of the Flowmaster NMCA WEST Street Car Series.

The event will be the 2nd NMCA WEST Street Car Series motorsport show featuring Aerospace Components NHRA Unleashed. There will be eleven NMCA WEST drag racing classes, including the six-second 240 mph Garrett Turbo Pro Street cars, along with index and bracket eliminators. Participants in each of the racing categories as part of the Aerospace Components NHRA Unleashed program will be competing for an NHRA Wally. Fans will see an action-packed line-up of racecars, a giant car show with over fifty different awards presented each day, a huge manufactures midway, and used parts swap meet. “We are very excited about the tremendous privilege we’ve been afforded by NHRA to bring our style of drag racing and motorsport show to this storied facility,” stated Charlie Harmon, President of the NMCA, referring to Pomona’s famous quarter- mile.

Harmon isn’t the only one excited, Fairplex Vice President, Dale Coleman, offered, “We are thrilled with the opportunity to accomplish multiple objectives with this new partnership with the NMCA. We will be able to offer a much needed venue for local area racing enthusiasts to compete thus serving the community well, while also offering an action-packed entertainment opportunity for the many drag racing and car show fans here Southern California.”

“With drag racing classes ranging from the ultra-high tech Pro Mod/Pro Street category, to a number of index and bracket categories, and the ever popular TREMEC True Street class, we think this will be a very high-profile event. The True Street class is specifically designed for licensed and insured street legal vehicles capable of making a 30-mile cruise on the public roadways. Once the cars return to the track, they make multiple runs down the track and the passes are averaged with the overall winner crowned,” Harmon said. Awards are also given to True Street racers who win different ET categories. “Demand for this event will most likely require that the drag racing entries be limited,” Harmon added. “However, we do plan to offer a discounted pre-entry for this event, which would guarantee competitor participation for the event. Gate entries will be accepted for the event but may have to be cut off when each class meets its quota,” Harmon concluded.

2012 NMCA WEST Street Car Series events, presented by Flowmaster, will feature the Aerospace Components NHRA Unleashed and take place at the following venues: Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, CA – June 22-24; Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, CA – August 17-19; Speedworld Dragstrip in Phoenix, AZ – September 21-23; and tentatively scheduled for Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA – October 19-21. For event information, as it becomes available, please log onto www.nmcadigital.com or contact the NMCA WEST at (714) 444-2426.

Ford offers seven vehicles with the smallest engines in their segments – more than any other competitor

Powered by EcoBoost CO2 emissions while delivering the performance customers demand technology, Ford’s smaller engines help reduce vehicle weight for better fuel economy and lower

Ford’s smallest engine yet, the EcoBoost 1.0-liter three-cylinder, debuts in North America about a year from now

For decades, size meant everything when it came to engines – bigger was better and there was no replacement for displacement. But volatile gasoline prices and growing consumer interest in clean technologies are turning that notion on its head.

Today, buyers are snapping up cars and trucks powered by smaller engines that offer better fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance.

When the EcoBoost-equipped 2013 Fusion, Escape and 2.0-liter Taurus arrive on dealer lots this spring and summer, Ford will offer an industry-leading seven vehicles with the smallest engines in their segments--more than any competitor.

Ford’s new global family of EcoBoost engines offer customers more affordable, high-efficiency powertrain choices, along with Ford’s growing lineup of hybrid and electric models. On average, an EcoBoost engine can improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent, yet it costs around $1,000 on most vehicles.

Available now in displacements of 1.6, 2.0 and 3.5 liters, Ford’s EcoBoost engines are designed to offer drivers outstanding performance in everything from economy cars to trucks.

Most of the Ford vehicles with the smallest engines in their segments – 2013 Escape and 2013 Fusion (1.6 liters); Explorer, Edge and Taurus (2.0 liters); and Interceptor and F-150 (3.5 liters) – deliver the same or greater power than the larger, heavier engines in competitive vehicles, along with higher fuel economy.

Replacing large engines with smaller-displacement EcoBoost engines is one way Ford is delivering on its promise to lead or be among the leaders in fuel economy in every segment in which it competes.

As with cell phones, laptops and other consumer electronics, Ford’s engines will continue to shrink – yet become more powerful – in the coming years.

The next new EcoBoost engine scheduled for launch in North America, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder coming in 2013, will be Ford’s smallest yet. This compact, innovative engine – which is the same length as the average laptop computer – is rated at 125 horsepower, making it one of the highest output-per-liter regular production engines Ford has ever made.

This year, Ford Motor Company will offer EcoBoost engines in 12 Ford and Lincoln nameplates – Focus ST, 2013 Fusion and Escape, Taurus, Interceptor, Flex, Edge, Explorer and F-150, as well as the latest Lincoln MKT and MKS models and the all-new Lincoln MKZ.. By 2015, the company plans to offer an EcoBoost engine on 90 percent of its North American nameplates.

Light + small + power = better

In addition to developing more horsepower per liter than the larger engines they are replacing, EcoBoost motors are helping Ford reduce vehicle weight, which improves handling and braking and helps increase fuel economy.

The 2013 Escape and Fusion models provide a graphic example of why Ford’s new generation of smaller, lighter and more powerful engines are better. In the 2012 Escape and Fusion, the 3.0-liter V6 engine is rated at 240 horsepower and 223 lb.-ft. of torque. That engine weighs 340 pounds.

The new 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that is optional in the 2013 Escape and Fusion is rated at 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque and it weighs 295 pounds, 45 pounds less than the old 3.0-liter. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine available in both vehicles delivers 178 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft of torque and weighs just 223 pounds.

Since launching EcoBoost in summer 2009, Ford has sold more than 180,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles in North America, making it the most rapidly adopted fuel-saving technology in recent automotive history.

According to Ward’s sales data, it took Toyota 50 months, for example, to sell 100,000 gasoline-electric hybrids in North America. And Ford’s EcoBoost lineup outsells all competitors’ diesel, compressed natural gas and battery-electric cars combined.

EcoBoost is a suite of technologies that combines turbocharging with direct injection, variable valve timing and precise engine controls to increase the power output and efficiency of the gasoline internal combustion engine. The increased power output enables Ford to replace a V8 engine with a V6, a V6 with a four-cylinder and a four-cylinder with a three-cylinder – with no loss of performance.

“The F-150 is a great example of how EcoBoost is changing the way customers think of our engines,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering. “Before we launched the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, few people would have believed a V6 was tough enough to get the job done in a full-size truck. The last time a six-cylinder engine outsold a V8 in the F-150 was in the late 1980s.

“But with 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, towing capacity as much as 11,300 pounds and EPA highway fuel economy of 22 mpg, the EcoBoost V6 has quickly become the top-selling engine in the F-150,” said Bakaj. Just over 40 percent of F-150s are sold with an EcoBoost engine, he added.

EcoBoost Edge is another small-engine success story. With a nearly 20 percent take rate, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Edge is exceeding sales projections.

Ford EcoBoost engines are also proving popular in Europe, where the 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder units are offered across several nameplates, and the all-new 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost has met with unanimous acclaim.

At next week’s Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress at Cobo Center in Detroit, Ford executives will be giving presentations that outline Ford Motor Company’s powertrain strategy.
The Mustang Wranglers are hosting the 30th Annual All Ford Show & Swap Meet on June 2nd.

We expect up to 350 cars and nearly 3500 people. It is the largest All Ford show in the state of Oregon. See last year's show at www.mustang-club.com. The Mustang Wranglers are a registered non-profit in Oregon. The show proceeds benefit four charities: Operation Santa Claus for families of deployed soldiers, Loaves & Fishes, Meals on Wheels, and the Sunshine Pantry, serving hungry people in our area. To help them we need 1)Products for our raffle; 2)Trophy sponsors--only $75 per class gets your name on 2 trophies & announced at the award ceremony; 3)Items for goodie bags (quantities of 100+); 4)Monetary donations.
